Snorkeling and Diving Tours on Maui

Snorkeling and diving tours on Maui are some of the most exciting adventures you can have while visiting the island. With its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and incredible marine life, Maui offers experiences that you’ll remember forever. Whether you’re a beginner snorkeler or an experienced diver, there are plenty of tours to suit your level. Many tours also have the added bonus of whale watching during the winter months (December to April), making the journey to your snorkel or dive spot just as thrilling as the activity itself!

One of the most famous snorkeling and diving locations on Maui is Molokini Crater, a crescent-shaped volcanic crater located about three miles off the coast of South Maui. This protected marine sanctuary is known for its clear water (with visibility up to 150 feet) and diverse marine life. Tours to Molokini usually depart early in the morning from Maʻalaea Harbor or Kihei Boat Ramp and take about 20-30 minutes by boat to reach the crater. Most tours last about 4-5 hours and include multiple stops, with time to snorkel or dive at Molokini and often a second location, such as Turtle Town.

As you make your way to Molokini during whale season, you’ll likely catch sight of humpback whales breaching, spouting, or slapping their tails in the distance. Many boat captains will slow down and give you a chance to enjoy the whales before continuing to the snorkel site. It’s a magical experience that adds even more excitement to the trip.

Another popular snorkeling and diving spot is Turtle Town, located near Makena in South Maui. This area is famous for its Hawaiian green sea turtles (known as honu) that glide gracefully through the water. Tours to Turtle Town are often combined with Molokini Crater trips, but some focus solely on this location. The water is calm and shallow, making it perfect for snorkeling, even if you’re new to the activity. You’ll also see colorful fish like parrotfish, butterflyfish, and wrasse swimming around the coral reefs.

For those looking for a more off-the-beaten-path experience, Honolua Bay in West Maui is another fantastic snorkeling and diving destination. Honolua is a marine preserve, which means it’s teeming with life, including vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, and sometimes even rays or eels. Some tours depart from nearby Lahaina Harbor, and the ride offers stunning views of the West Maui Mountains. If you’re visiting during whale season, the boat ride to Honolua is a prime time to spot humpback whales.

For divers, Lanai Cathedrals is a must-visit spot. This famous dive site off the coast of nearby Lanaʻi features underwater lava tubes and dramatic structures that look like a cathedral. Most tours to Lanai depart from Lahaina and take about 45 minutes to an hour by boat. These full-day trips often include two dive sites and are best for certified divers.

Snorkeling and diving tours typically include all the equipment you’ll need, as well as food and drinks, so all you have to do is bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure. Whether you’re gliding alongside turtles, swimming through lava tubes, or watching whales breach in the distance, these tours are an unforgettable way to experience the magic of Maui’s underwater world!
